Ok so Vista loaded ok on a clean install build 5308 via Technet. Downloaded the ATI full Vista drivers for the X1600 and they do not work. Had a look on web for fix cannot see any, anyone here had problems with this type of GPU? On installing ATI drivers it installs with errors, ATI centre will not run, although the card is shown as a ATI 1600 Pro in the system it has the yellow qusetion mark! Tried updating drivers comes up with error '(10) Device could not start'. Any help or pointers to help appreciated - want to at least have alook ar Aero, bought the GPU for that purpose.

Well tried that, but still no joy, anybody else have any problems with this card and found a way around it?

What helped me was to go into safe mode. Uninstall the current display device in the device manager and reboot. Then I am able to get into vista. But I have to do this every single time and I am not happy cause this is a newer card. I expect this from an older card to a much much much newer device.
Again I am also having the same problems with the same card. I get resource conflicts.

There is a reasonably good Radeon driver built in to Windows Vista Beta 2. I'm using it now to run my Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro. It was setup during the Vista Beta 2 install program and I didn't have to download a driver from the ATI site. I suggest that you uninstall all ATI programs from the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Then go into Device Manager and remove the Radeon X1600 from Display Adaptors. Reboot and let Vista plug and play your X1600.

There is a useable Radeon driver built into Windows Vista. It setup my Sapphire Radeon X1600 Pro when I installed Vista and it allowed me full range on video.
To get back to the driver shipped with Vista, uninstall all ATI drivers in CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGAMS. Then right click on COMPUTER in the start menu, left click on PROPERTIES and find the DEVICE MANAGER. Click on DISPLAY ADAPTOR, select your Radeon X1600 and click on remove. Your screen may go blank. Power off and reboot. Vista should do a "plug 'n play" install of your X1600 with a useable driver on restart.
If that doesn't work, reinstall Vista and use the Vista Beta 2 Radeon X1600 Series driver dated 7/31/2006 (how do they do that?) and numbered 8.26.0.0.
